Concorde Takes Flight Again

On this day that we look to the skies for a solar eclipse, The Replica Report looks up - at the clouds!  Extractionist Roy Peckham of Pontypridd, South Wales is the reason why this time as he has photographed a wonderful Replica.

The Concorde was the first turbojet-powered airliner and was considered a marvel of engineering before it was retired in 2003, so, how could it be taking flight again in 2013?  Well it wasn't, it was the ghost of Concorde - a cloud that formed over the countryside in the shape of the grounded passenger jet.

Mr. Peckham, 66, spotted the plane-shaped cloud as it moved through the evening sky and said the cloud was coming from the direction of the Brecon Beacons.

He said: 'I saw the cloud and as it approached it became more and more defined.
'It looked like Concorde was flying across the countryside and about to land in Pontypridd.'

This story was first published by Sara Smyth on 5 May 2013.

Rock Man Has A Face Of Satisfaction

Stac Levenish or Stac Leibhinis (sometimes simply called "Levenish/Leibhinis") is a sea stack in the St. Kilda archipelago in Scotland that Resembles a man relaxing and enjoying a dip in the ocean. Lying about 3 miles off Village Bay on Hirta, it is part of the rim of an extinct volcano that includes Dùn, Ruaival and Mullach Sgar.

The stack is 203 feet high. Its north cliff appears to have the profile of a face, visible when traveling to St. Kilda from the east. The skerry of Na Bodhan lies to the north east.

A stack is a geological land form consisting of a steep and often vertical column or columns of rock in the sea near a coast, isolated by erosion. Stacks are formed through processes of coastal geomorphology, which are entirely natural. Time, wind, and water are the only factors involved in the formation of a stack. They are formed when part of a headland is eroded by hydraulic action, which is the force of the sea or water crashing against the rock. The force of the water weakens cracks in the headland, causing them to later collapse, forming free-standing stacks and even a small island. Stacks can provide important nesting locations for seabirds, and many are popular for rock climbing - not to mention almost all stacks are named after some object the Resemble.

Extra! Extra! The Replica Report is the first to Recognize that not only is there a Resemblance to a face in the side view of the Stac, but also a Resemblance to a profile face in an aerial view of Stac Levenish.

I Lost My Train of Thought

A train is a connected series of rail vehicles propelled along a track to transport cargo or passengers. It is the "connected series" of the train that resembles the "connected series" of thoughts and as a result has given rise to the phrase "Train of Thought".

The train of thought, stream of thought', chain of thought or trail of thought (Sarah Rickards) refers to the interconnection in the sequence of ideas expressed during a connected discourse or thought, as well as the sequence itself, especially in discussion how this sequence leads from one idea to another.

When a reader or listener "loses the train of thought" (i.e., loses the relation between consecutive sentences or phrases, or the relation between non-verbal concepts in an argument or presentation), comprehension is lost of the expressed or unexpressed thought.

The term "train of thoughts" was introduced and elaborated as early as in 1651 by Thomas Hobbes in his Leviathan.

For your entertainment, I have included this link to a fun word game called Train of Thought:  http://www.wordgames.com/train-of-thought.html

Do you have Hot Lips?

The 'Hot Lips' plant or 'Sore-mouth' bush are two names given Psychotria poeppigiana because of the obvious Resemblance!
     P. poeppigiana is a large shrub - a plant species in the family Rubiaceae. The inflorescences are carried upright or semi-erect and are surrounded by large bracts, colored a conspicuous red, that attract pollinators. The flowers themselves are inconspicuous, with the small yellow petals and sepals forming a narrow corollar tube. Pollinators are mainly hummingbirds, namely small hermit (Phaethornithinae) species like the Black-throated Hermit (Phaethornis atrimentalis), Straight-billed Hermit (P. bourcieri) and Reddish Hermit (P. ruber). They do not insert their bills deeply into the small flowers, and thus the pollinators of the Sore-mouth Bush include curved- and straight-billed species alike.
In botany, a bract is a modified or specialized leaf, especially one associated with a reproductive structure such as a flower, inflorescence axis, or cone scale. Bracts are often (but not always) different from foliage leaves. They may be smaller, larger, or of a different color, shape, or texture. Typically, they also look different from the parts of the flower, such as the petals and/or sepals. Some bracts are brightly colored and serve the function of attracting pollinators, either together with the perianth or instead of it.
Hot Lips ranges widely in the tropical Americas, from Chiapas, Oaxaca, Tabasco and Veracruz in Mexico to the very north of Argentina. It does not occur on the Pacific side of the American cordillera however, and is thus absent from El Salvador and Chile. It is probably also absent from Uruguay and Paraguay.

The Phantom Foetus

Unlike any other art form, Extractionism is the only one to be covered regularly by the news today. Metro, of the UK, features Extractionist Heather Large and her Recognition of the Emperor Palpatine.
It all began about a year ago when an ultrasound scan of an unborn baby revealed an eerie resemblance to the evil emperor from Star Wars, and is now, with the help of the Internet, gaining widespread attention.
Heather Large, 39, immediately spotted the seemingly cloaked figure glaring back at her from a scan in the 20th week of her pregnancy - can you see the claw-like left hand?
Husband Toby, 33, from Illinois, said: ‘During the ultrasound, Heather noticed that one of the images appeared to look like Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars.
‘At this point, everyone in the room had a laugh, including our eight-year-old daughter Hannah and the ultrasound technician.
‘At the end of the ultrasound, the tech asked us if we would like to include that image on our take-home CD, since we were so amused.’
Toby's son Bowie, now eight months old, captivated the imagination of Star Wars fans when he uploaded it to his Devian art webpage last week, causing a stir.

La Dame de Mali or Lady of Mali

La Dame de Mali, or Lady of Mali, is a feature of Mount Loura, near the town of Mali, in northern Guinea, near the border with Senegal that resembles the profile of a woman. And not just the head, but also chest, waist and belly!
Mount Loura, altitude 1515 m (Fello Loura in the Pular language) is the northernmost point and highest peak in the Fouta Djallon in northern Guinea. It is 7 km from the prefecture of Mali (also Mali-ville or Mali-Centre). It is part of a complex of mountains called the Massif de Tamgue, which rises to steep cliffs on three sides, and provides views into Senegal and Mali. Its most interesting feature, the rocky profile of an old woman (referred to as the "Dame de Mali" or "Lady of Mali"), can be seen from the nearby village of Dongol Loura. Src: Wikipedia

UT Tower / Frost Bank Tower / Owl

Let's go local and talk about Austin's very own Resemblance - the University of Texas' Tower and its resemblance to an owl. If one orients themselves just right to the Main Building of UT - the faces of the clocks become eyes while the corner of the observation deck suggests a beak. The resemblance is so strong that students to this day orally pass on a fictitious story of how the architect of the Main Building and Tower was a graduate of Rice University and designed it to resemble their mascot the owl, as a rival's way of poking fun. Then, in 2004, the Frost Bank Tower came along, also resembling an owl but this time the eyes are made out of the Frost logos.   Here again, the resemblance so strong, only now it no longer mattered that the building wasn't on the UT campus (a key element in the drama of the tale), the story jumped over and became a legend for Frost's design but with some modifications: when he designed the building Rice and UT had a huge rivalry and he designed it this way to "humiliate" Austin and UT. I've also heard the architect was rejected from UT but accepted to Rice University, so when he was asked to design this building, he designed it to resemble an owl looking down over the UT campus.  The 307-foot UT tower was designed by Paul Philippe Cret and the Frost Bank Tower was designed by Duda/Paine Architects, LLP and HKS, Inc., none of which had Rice propaganda agendas.
About the author: the power of Resemblances inspired artist Ismael Cavazos to create the Old Man in the Peanut after recognizing the heart of a peanut resembles an old man's hooded head complete with beard.  He now brings you Remarkable Resemblances from around the World with the Replica Report.

El Rey Ray

Pareidolia is a word often used when reporting on such stories.  The word was first used by Goldstein in 1994 despite other vocabulary words existing such as apophenia synchronicity & simulacra and is limited in scope when discussing Resemblances.

The Saviour Not Saved

The most remarkable element of this latest Extraction is that the Resemblance was covered up by paint!  If you consider that a grilled cheese sandwich sold for $28,000 because of a Resemblance to the Virgin Mary and a chicken nugget sold for $8,100 because of its Resemblance to George Washington, it makes hearing this news even more strange.  Perhaps if the owners that contracted Sam Dalby, a 37 year old self employed interior decorator, had discovered it and not Sam himself, they would have been more inclined to save it - maybe even framing it off as I instruct my students to do when they find a Resemblance at their homes.  This Resemblance appears on a Type II Matrix - man made but inadvertant or unintentional.

Chicken McNugget More Expensive than Gold Nugget

Here's Rebekah Speight's story in her own words:

"Approximately 3 years ago, I treated my children to “99 cent McNugget Tuesday” and play time at our local McDonald’s. As I was cleaning up, I noticed one particular nugget and began to laugh. I picked it up for a closer look, and sure enough it was in the likeness of President George Washington. I decided to take it home and show my husband this hysterical find.
When he arrived home, I pulled it out of the freezer and he could not believe his eyes. We shared a moment of laughter as we joked about putting it on Ebay. Then back in the freezer it went.
This “President George Washington Chicken McNugget” became a show and tell item for friends and family who came to visit, and all have responded with awe and laughter over this remarkable find. We have shared many laughs over this “President George Washington Chicken McNugget”, but now he has been called to a higher purpose.
The students of Family Worship Center in Sioux City, Iowa are in the process of trying to raise $15,000 for Church Camp this summer. My husband and I felt led to auction this “President George Washington Chicken McNugget”as part of our fundraising effort. 100% of the money raised will go to Family Worship Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
By bidding on this rare “President George Washington Chicken McNugget”… not only will you have an opportunity to be the new owner of this rare find, but you will be investing in the lives of children."

The bidding closed today at a whopping $8,100 and is more expensive than a nugget of gold the same size - all because of it's Resemblance!
